Perhaps the terrorism is the story? Look at this new shiny thing while something else is happening under our nose?

A code transmitted to a receiver that must be monitored 24-7, 365 to be of any value. I just don't get the threat, but then I may have missed something. I wouldn't make a good spy or operative... Fun to speculate none the less.

Army Officer killed in the Old Dominion University shooting was ROTC instructor Lieutenant Colonel Brandon Shah. He had fulfilled his dream to be an Army pilot, flying an AH64 Apache over Iraq, Afghanistan, and Eastern Europe during Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and Atlantic Resolve. He returned from battle to be killed in his own homeland by a terrorist, Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, who yelled “Allahu Akbar” before the attack. Sleeper cell hit?

A technique as old as the hills; can even use common language. In how many films have we seen underground partisans in occupied countries waiting for BBC shortwave newscasts, with coded language that contains instructions?

Of course, the potential danger today from terrorists using such techniques is huge: think chemical or biological agents, explosions at fuel, water, or electrical facilities, or even a 'dirty' radiological bomb. What kind of counter-intelligence means can we use to ferret out these 'sleeper' agents before they can act?

It occurs to me that identifying, tracking and seizing isolated cells and their one-time pads is a thing that the Israelis are particularly good at, but maybe that’s because I read too many Gabriel Allon stories. I agree that this is a time for vigilance at home and that more is better when it comes to human intelligence. I see some merit it the speculation that these broadcasts are directed into Iran rather than out of it. Time will tell. Keep up your good work, Muse!

I think there are already sleeper cells in the United States. In the book Countdown to Jerusalem it was stated that it's possible there are nukes prepositioned throughout the country waiting for the signal. All this courtesy of our elected representatives. Keep voting!

replace Iran in the above with the transnational crime syndicate and you'd be close

This makes perfect sense. Thank you for the heads up! We, as Americans, can be so naive. I’ll just keep praying for right action under God’s Law. Blessed day to all. 🙏

This won’t make sense to the U.S. government until it does. By then it will be too late. What I reject is not the possibility of covert signaling or clandestine networks. Those are old tools. What I reject is the dishonest framing by certain pundits and experts that this is some "new" depravity born of “desperate Iranians.” It is not new at all. The United States and its allies have used, refined, and normalized this kind of warfare for generations. We wrote the rules. We do not get to act surprised when others learn them.

Do not forget the Israelis. They punch far beyond their weight and Mossad has a remarkable track record. That is why October 7th is so puzzling.

Not that puzzling. Security leaks happen. Butler, PA was a very close call, and it was a security breach. You have to appreciate Mossad’s pager switch, which was a low tech way to incapacitate Hezbollah terrorists. Very effective. The interesting part is that in this day and age, Hezbollah leadership chose low tech pagers to keep members coordinated. https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/17/world/video/hezbollah-pagers-explosion-lebanon-ldn-digvid

The idea that a regime such as Iran's will not strike back at the US in the face our kinetic strikes is laughable. Mr. Muse's observation seems most plausible that such a clever adversary would use this fail-safe system to avoid the overwhelming SIGINT capabilities of the US. Each of us would be well advised to increase our observations of others when in public. And to be armed against possible terrorist attack. Sleepwalking when warring with such a foe is foolhardy.

Iran would be making a huge mistake in unleashing sleeper cells in CONUS. The American public is divided when American deaths occur overseas, it unites when terrorism comes home.

More than a few would help the terrorists, and I can think of at least one political party that would.
