Today’s ‘Fast Take’ is a CNBC article sharing reader reactions to President Biden’s plan to give college graduates $10,000 to pay down their student loans. Democrats are angry that the president isn’t using taxpayer funds to pay off 100% of their student loans. For example, after finishing high school, Erin received taxpayer-subsidized loans allowing her to receive a $270,000 education. As a result of the taxpayer’s investment and erin’s hard work, she has earned more than $800,000 since graduating allowing her to travel the world visiting thirteen countries. Erin still owes $50,000 for her education and when she heard the president was considering sending her $10,000 to pay down her debt she told CNBC that he should “Cancel it all or do nothing.”1
Democrats like Erin believe that the taxpayer-subsidized loans she used to attend college should be paid off by taxpayers like Harriet Williams. Just a year older than Erin, Harriet started working in a poultry plant after she graduated from high school. Harriet has never taken a proper vacation. When she found out Erin didn’t want the $10,000 Biden was offering she pointed out that $10,000 would change her life and the life of her daughter.
Why should America’s working-class who never attended college pay for Democrat’s student loans? Erin is living the American dream and yet she wants Harriet to work even harder to make her life easier. If we’ve got the money to forgive the debt of America’s college graduates we ought to use that money to help hard-working Americans like Harriet first…
