I think that according to its advocates, the core justification for allowing legal abortions rests on the claim of bodily autonomy. Accepting the premise for discussion, then, A woman is entitled to make her own decisions about her body, and about medical interventions in her body.
IOW, she is entitled to have her body relieved of the embryo or fetus. To be made “unpregnant.”
But it does not follow that she is also entitled to a dead baby. In later stages of pregnancy, the fetus can survive outside the womb.
Using the famous analogy of her being involuntarily required to sustain the life of the violinist, the woman is entitled to be disconnected at any point in time after discovering that she has been so encumbered. But she is not then entitled to prevent the intervention of medical personnel who are prepared to hook the violinist up to machines that would be able to save his life.
For this hypothetical, let’s substitute the concept that the fetus needs to inhabit the womb for about six months to develop the capability of living outside the womb with the provision that the violinist’s body has been healing itself every day that he is hooked up to the woman. After about six months, he might live if disconnected, and the longer he had been connected, the better his chances.
Let’s also stipulate that there are loving parents willing and able to adopt the fetus after delivery, just as the violinist has family eager to take him in and care for him on his road to full recovery.
So. How does the principle of bodily autonomy grant a woman who for whatever reasons has sought a later term abortion the right to mandate the death of the fetus/baby? It’s important to know that after about the first trimester, the fetus must be delivered, and there is no medical reason regarding the woman’s health that the fetus must be killed first.

There’s a lot of families struggling with infertility that can’t afford adoption. There’s also a shortage of babies in the USA to adopt. For every baby adopted there are 30-40 families waiting. Why? Maybe because they’re all getting unalived? I agree it’s very important, but it seems like everyone forgets those babies are wanted, badly. Just by a different family on a long waiting list.
Post-partum depression is a very real experience for some women, and to varying degrees. I know of one woman who suffered from it and she said it was the most terrifying experience of her life. She didn’t have notions to kill her child, but she felt utterly detached from him, and did experience suicidal ideation at her worst moments. This was many years ago but she did manage to get proper help and a lot of family support, though it took her a long while to feel “herself” again, and be able to truly embrace her child fully.
The difference these days is the amount of prescription drugs that just get doled out like Pez, that most often only manage to exacerbate the problem, not help with it.
This society has gotten too accustomed to taking a pill to solve whatever ails them, and in most instances - if not all - it only tends to make that problem worse.
I understand, I went thru it too. I thought my husband was telling people I was a bad mother and a danger to my babies. We went to the doctor and, yes , they gave me a prescription 🙄. I was blessed in that it resolved quickly. I still believe that if women were more aware that they would be well taken care of they’d be more willing to go thru a pregnancy. Aside from the post partum depression issue.

I know I felt so useless, after going through infertility and treatments and adoption preparations we finally got pregnant and then I thought my husband was turning against me and that I wasn’t fit for motherhood. I’m so blessed that he listened and that we had a postpartum doula who recognized the situation. I know so many don’t.
No, but she didn't have to kill them! She could've just got a divorce and leave the kids to her husband, or just left the family! I hope she gets charged with murder, no insanity.

The most profound quote on abortion I ever heard was from Mother Teresa, “It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish.” It is one thing for an individual to make that decision, it is quite another when societies do it. No one is immune from the consequences.

That would prevent any such recurrence of those atrocities, but still too late for those children lost!

I'm not sure you can compare the two. In the woman's case, it has to do with her mental issues after child birth, meds used in treating that, as well as any attendant psychosis. In the rapist's case, it is more about power and control, is an assault, and not really anything to do with sex. Raping an 85 year old woman, as an example, is hardly some need for sex. Women killing their kids also doesn't require that they suffer from Postpartum depression. Susan Smith, as an example, drove her children into a lake and drowned them long after they were born! She was prosecuted and imprisoned. As an aside, rapists should qualify for sterilization as well. Finally, as I previously stated, this woman should never have the opportunity to repeat this tragedy!

I had a sister-in-law who spent a year in a hospital after the birth of her second child.
