Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Chancellor Kamar Samuels announced that New York City public school students may not use student-facing generative AI for the 2026-2027 year.
Is it sense or Dum down not wanting kids to advance. I know they say they want them to think but the world is advancing what happens if these kids don't keep up? They are Led! Enslaved to their masters thoughts and ways? Don't spend money on knowledge spend it on buses. Mandami on him and his wife and Muslim cronies build a better mosque and think of ways to take control. Just saying New York forgot 9-11.
There's plenty of evidence that all the screen time in general and lots of screen time in the schools in particular have helped made gen Z dumber than millenials.
Are there other factors in the decline in IQ? quite possibly. Wi-fi radiation seems to hurt our memory. Glyphosate is certainly a possible suspect. So is ultra processed food. And all those extra vaccines have done a number on our kids.
But comparisons have been made between schools with computers in the classroom and schools without, and the the computers have hurt kids.
A case could be made that an individualized tutoring room that uses computers could help. (It's doesn't need to be AI, by the way, there are computer programs from 30 years ago - at least - that can give an explanation if necessary, and ramp up or not ramp up the difficulty level based on the prior answer).
Good point. Students learn by writing. If you read, comprehend, and articulate your answers on written paper, it’s been proven to help remember the lessons/results, rather than typing on a screen. A1 can be very beneficial to the teacher and the student, but limited screen time must be enforced.
Good point. At 56 years old, I carry with me a body of knowledge and experience that can leverage AI to do things that would take me and cost me much longer and much more to realize. In this sense, AI is an incredible tool for me, not a crutch.
New York and Los Angeles are going to stack dumb AI policy on top of the learning loss during COVID. Raising a generation destined to be servants to the people who made those choices.

Wealthy families can buy private tutors, subscriptions, and AI-centered schooling; poor families depend on whatever the public system permits. Stanford’s evidence review found promising gains alongside unresolved questions, which supports disciplined trials, transparent measurement, and human supervision. A blanket moratorium sacrifices that opportunity across most of the system. Beijing is teaching children how AI works while New York teaches apprehension. When this generation enters the global economy, nobody will award extra credit because its political leaders mistook institutional fear for educational prudence.
You know what Chinese children are studying? The history of Western Civilization, Greek mythology, Plato, Socrates, and the Great Books! Yup.
While we’re arguing about AI in the classroom no one is talking about the real problem: the curriculum! American History, Civics, reading, handwriting including cursive, basic math and science.
So whether it comes via AI or hardbound books, (I love books, myself), I don’t really care. But I care very much what our kids are being taught. That’s what should be the predominant concern right now in this country.
And there are no studies showing islamo communists destroy cultures either. Just abundant physical evidence
