Yes and a big yes. You have to wonder if the people praising this movie have actually gone to any movies in the past 50 years or watched any TV shows. See; The Magnificent Seven, see any of the Denzel Washington Equalizer movies or the TV series before that. Walking Tall movies, Chuck Norris movies, And I seem to remember movies about a guy calling himself Batman. Then there were movies\TV show Daredevil. This is not anything new, or even old.
What is new is an attack by a filmmaker on the liberal establishment. Also making the good guy a US landlord and the bad guys liberal judges. That is new.
Just a change of hats. In old westerns the Indians were the bad guys and the pioneers were the good guys. Then came movies like Cheyenne Autumn and Dances with Wolves. The Mafia use to be the bad guys then came the Godfather and the Soprano's and ??? They were still bad guys but good bad guys or bad good guys or bad guys that you were suppose to be sympathetic too. Noticed they chickened out of showing Tony killed at the end. Was Walter White a good guy or a bad guy? Noticed there was nothing in the show about deaths from the Meth he was making. In Birth of a Nation the KKK were the good guys. In old westerns a lot of the times the heroes would be displaced Southerners to went west after the Civil War. But they were seen as sympathetic because of Carpet Baggers. Shame about that slavery thing though, so lets not mention it. Liberals were the good guys ( Civil Rights, Integration, etc) and are now the bad guys. The problem is the extremes. The pendulum swings too far from one side to the other and keeps going until it is forced to correct. It doesn't self correct it is forced too. Think we need a movie where a vigilante goes around and kills other vigilantes both on the left and the right. When asked why he or she says they just like to kill people. With wasn't that Dexter?

I think in the first Dirty Harry movie the judge released the bad guy and there was mention of a rapist being released though as an aside early on (if memory serves me). In the Batman Comic books Batman carried and used a gun early on before the code came in. In a 1940 #1 issue he hung someone from his Batplane. And he was a Billionaire! Look the Mack Bolan Executioner Books. Not movies I grant you but the same idea and it's been around for a while of vigilante revenge. See The Marvel Comics The Punisher. You are missing the point, the essence and the very definition of a vigilante. Mangione is a criminal as is the mentally deranged twit that threatened Kavanaugh. A vigilante, as the movies you mentioned specifically, goes after criminals that law enforcement was either unable to or not equipped to deal with effectively hence the street justice version of the vigilante. It is about vigilante justice, not murder.
