AI can write the basic routines it is told to write by the designers. It cannot design anything unique. It can merely assemble what is already written somewhere else.
And if companies think quantity or innovation quality is a winning strategy, good luck. Your competitors who hired innovators and use AI to augment and accelerate their innovation will run you into bankruptcy.
And as for how to keep AI in check, the only thing the government needs to do is keep AI companies liable for damage. Don't let them off the hook like we did with pharma that now can legally sell poison.
Require AI companies to pay damages and you won't need strangling regulations.
I am not a programmer but I have followed DHH's journey with AI. He originally thought it would be most helpful for juniors. I'll wait and see how it shakes out.
As a retired programmer I cannot disagree more with the premise of this article. AI will result in a loss of creativity by removing the motivation of people to create unique, customized, solutions to business problems. First US programmers were replaced because of offshore, now they will be replaced by agents / bots. What does it say about a society that has lost the ability to do for itself but is dependent on machines to do essential tasks?
I gather you are serious. Architects might find that last question amusing. As might farmers. Or airline pilots. Or shipping companies. Or bus drivers. As might every person who has ever used a machine to enable him or her to do what they could not with only brain and brawn. Our species is defined by tools and their complexity. It's up to us to decide how we use them.
P.S. Loved the Ruby on Rails reference and development back story. I'm involved in a project right now that will revolutionize its industry and likely could not have been done as little as a year ago. So, don't tell me that AI will stunt creativity.
You are conflating two different ideas. As a programmer I used tools just to do my job. However, I created the solution not any machine. AI is far more than a tool. It replaces human invention and human creativity. If you can't tell the difference that's your problem, not mine. Bug off.
