I just asked ChatGPT, and was told that approximately 100-200 million animals are hunted and die by gunshot each year in the United States, and approximately 50-150 million are slaughtered via halal or kosher slaughter (functionally similar for our purposes).

The critical point is that in kosher slaughter the technician is allowed to stun the animal before killing it. In halal, the person is prevented from stunning. They bleed out in terror.

And you're ok with killing animals without stunning, when there's a good chance that they'll suffer horrific maiming, agony, and fear. Most good hunters I know that kill for food understand they don't want the animal suffering so they shot to kill not to maim and hunters don't want the animal running off. Taking that shot is not random it is calculated. There are always people that don't get this but halal is a trapped animal in a cage and it does suffer and that is done on purpose.
I am sure that they seek to shoot to kill rather than maim. I am also sure that not every shot is perfect. The hunters are of varying levels of skill, shooting from a distance, and under varying conditions. It is inevitable that some large number of animals will be maimed and suffer greatly.
I just went back to ChatGPT to get the numbers. Per the tool, roughly 10-15% of deer that are shot with rifles are maimed. Amongst those shot with arrows, the number soars to 15-30%+. That's many millions of animals, each and every year.
Amongst waterfowl (ducks, geese, etc.), 20-30% are thought to be maimed rather than killed outright. Many more millions.
Amongst pheasants and rabbits and and squirrels, ChatGPT claims a 10-30% wounding rate.
It is undoubtedly true that many of these animals are quickly finished by a second shot. But that still leaves huge numbers that are maimed and die slowly.
