REPUBLICAN Chuck grassley ( next in line of succession if Trump & cabinet go down) initiated the block of the merger
the Biden administration’s focus has been on facilitating restructuring, maintaining employment, and preventing total liquidation through the bankruptcy process.
Contrasting Action: In contrast, in 2026, the Biden administration was criticized for opposing a merger between Spirit Airlines and JetBlue, which some critics cited as a factor in Spirit Airlines' subsequent bankruptcy and immediate cessation of operations.
But it was CEOs bad management of choosing to LIQUIDATE instead of re-investing in the airline company
The communists clearly killed Spirit on purpose. The thing normies don't seem to comprehend about communists is that their "hatred of the rich" is just envy. They actually want to take all money and opportunities away from anyone who isn't a communist. They also promote each other and try to only hire each other, while also attempting to destroy any of us who is merely individualistic. I was not political until they came after my businesses (I've always been a 2a supporter and that's how I've always known a war would come -- because ever since I was a kid, they've been "trying to get me lucky guns").

This isn’t socialism—it’s correction. The government blocked a deal that would have kept a competitor alive, and now it’s dealing with the fallout. You don’t fix that by pretending the market will magically sort it out. Liquidation doesn’t create competition—it kills it. The structure matters here: secured position, upside participation, no operational control. That’s not a handout—that’s a hard-nosed investment. The real irony? The same voices screaming “bailout” are ignoring the original intervention that caused the problem. You break it, you own it. And if you fix it right, taxpayers don’t just get their money back—they get paid.
Spirit is the worst airline with the rudest, most angry employees I've ever seen. I would walk to my destination before I would fly with them again. I'm glad they're going under. Any company this awful deserves to die.
Spirit airline and Southwest Airlines is like riding a bus through Central America back in the 70s. The decline an of the American airlines is evident.
I've not traveled Central America by bus, but I have used the economy airlines recently. And reluctantly. I must agree, overweight sloppy young people wearing pajamas and carrying huge stuffed animals was almost entertaining. I kept repeating to myself 'it's only two hours, it's only two hours'. Thankfully the AB-320 is highly automated so DEI&B cockpit crews wasn't a major concern. I prayed up though just in case.
What a horrible thing to say. My husband flew for Spirit for 17 years and retired with 30,000 hours in his logbook. How dare you call experienced professionals “DEI” hires as if it’s an insult when the current cabinet of the regime in the White House is a bunch of DEI unqualified hacks.
Yes, there’s nothing like that smell of a fresh baby diaper and Chinese food first thing in the morning to make your trip worthwhile. The trip to Central America was much more pleasant.
A dingbat woman cracked and peeled her overcooked boiled egg on the seat armrest I was to share with her. That’s another revolting odor and a person who lacks respect for others sharing space with her.
You state that Spirit was already saddled in debt, so it sounds like a very poorly run company, or one in the wrong market. If it collapsed then someone else would come in via capitalism, so why save such a poorly run company?
Spirit was blocked by the Biden Justice Department when they attempted to merge with JetBlue. President Trump said it would have supported increased competition. The Biden DOJ saw the merger as a threat to competition saying it would violate antitrust. When have Democrats like Biden and Merrick Garland ever supported competition? The acquisition of Activision by Microsoft was considered a concern of the Biden DOJ, but it eventually was allowed.
It is absolutely ridiculous for taxpayers to get involved. The DoJ should have allowed their proposed merger with Jet Blue to go through in the first place, and Spirit would likely have avoided this mess. Yet now the argument is that the government must get involved to sort out a mess made by government intervention. No thanks - we have a bankruptcy code so the debtors can take over and reorganize the company.
Spirit would most likely be bought up and put out of business. Look at how aggressive the big airlines are and how small companies are hit harder because they don’t have tanks of jet fuel purchased when prices were cheap. The timing is significant here. An example of what I am talking about, Virgin Atlantic is owned by Virgin Atlantic Limited, which is 51% owned by the Virgin Group and 49% by Delta Air Lines. Are you seeing this yet?
The economic illiteracy of Biden's people was astounding, and the canceled merger was a prime example. Unfortunately for us, Biden's people were the best the Dems have to offer - if they get into office again it'll be even worse.
I learn so much every time I read Muse’s articles. With this administration, we see clear business models that will protect tax dollars. Now compare to previous administrations that were always giving forgivable loans or grants with no oversight or accountability and usually with a political bias.

When it comes to any type of business deal, I'll trust Trump to do the right thing. This was an excellent explanation of this current issue.
Were you suggesting that the Obiden DOJ, made a decision that was not in the best interest of the American people????

Good thesis! Thanks!

Without Spirit Airlines, where will we get all the hilarious videos of ghetto bus riders in an enclosed airplane, 5 miles above the ground??

Simply gross and disrespectful. Not an encouraging omen for where we are or headed.
That’s what happens w/o competition. Before iPhones, the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X was as big as a brick.

Not just the Biden admin but Democrats generally.
Definitely the case, if you look at the mismanagement of blue cities and states.
Thank you for the clear explanation of how the government is now acting like a smart business operator. Lutnick is doing a great job.
