In the 60's the teamster's rep bought a new motorhome after the contract negation. In the 70's the teamsters managed to demanded they get more pay than the skills that required actual knowledge. The company folded a few months later. In the 80's they charged my company over a $1,000 to move a pallet from the dock to our sales space. It was about 80'. I dealt with a number of unions when I owned a unionized construction company in NJ for 20 years - Operating Engineers, Carpenters, Heavy General Laborers, Welders, Dockbuilders, Masons, and Building Trades. Once and once only with Teamsters. Teamster were the absolute worst. They believed in the old union way of using threats against companies when they didn't get their way, unlike the other unions which were managed by civilized, reasonable people.
Teamsters want this to pass to swell the member ranks and gain even more power, more money and political clout
This is socialism doing what socialism always does: killing ownership and calling it protection. A driver who becomes an owner escapes the wage cage. He builds equity, hires people, learns operations, and creates something he can sell, expand, or leave to his children. The Teamsters do not want that. The DSA does not want that. They want workers standardized, centralized, unionized, dues-paying, and politically manageable. Cabán and Mamdani could have written rules for safety, pay, transparency, or cooperatives. They wrote a bill that makes ambition illegal. The delivery man may get a raise. What he loses is a company.
Unions outlived their usefulness years ago. They now exist only to continue to pay large paychecks to the officers.
Look at the disaster that unions have caused in California! The SEIU and the teacher's unions screw the dues payers and the rest of of us.
