The Filibuster is a double edged sword and neither party was to give the right to the Filibuster. Trump doesn't care he just wants to get eliminate it to get what he wants but the problem is he has two years left in his term to deal without the Filibuster but the Republicans are going to have to deal without the Filibuster long after Trump is gone. I would love to see the Filibuster gone and the next two years Trump having to live without it when the Democrats take control of Congress. Then let Trump whine about not being able to stop the Democrats.

Excellent essay. Well written and factual. This can easily be used as a primer as to what has happened and what needs to happen.

What republicans don’t grasp is their very existence depends on getting this moved along or they WILL be replaced.

Tick tock, tick tock.

Your restraint in attributing Thune’s motive to “reverence” for the institution is too charitable, in my opinion. I very much appreciate your resistance to speculation about motives, but I don’t think most Republican are as disciplined. I personally smell a rat and am open to less charitable and more sinister motives. The very most charitable motive I will abide is that Thune couldn’t lead a starving wolf to a T-bone.The motive I’d wager my money on is that Republicans like Thune (we know who they are) are dead set against a successful Trump presidency-TDS so strong they’re willing to squander the opportunity to lead to assure Trump’s influence does not carry into the next administration.

There’s got to be a plan for this, no? Some kind of Hail Mary at least? I can’t see Trump letting the RINOs get away with this with so much at stake. 🔮
